Residents of Igbope and Kishi communities in Oke Ogun, Oyo State, have cried out for immediate government intervention following the collapse of the major bridge linking both towns.
The incident, which occurred after heavy rainfall between Monday night and Tuesday morning, has left thousands stranded and cut off critical access for people, goods, and farm produce.
The collapsed bridge, which connects Igbope in Oorelope Local Government Area and Kishi in Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo state is a key route for economic, social, and agricultural activity in the region.
According to community leaders, its destruction has paralyzed transportation, disrupted food supply chains, and endangered lives.
In a joint appeal addressed to the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and his deputy, Barr. Bayo Lawal, residents called for an emergency intervention to restore the vital link.
“The rain that fell overnight has completely washed away the bridge. Movement between Kisi and Igbope has stopped,” the statement read.
“We demand the immediate rehabilitation of the bridge. It is not just a matter of convenience, it is about survival, economic survival, access to health, and safety.”
The Onigbope of Igbope land, Oba Dr. Moses Olawale Oyetola Fabiyi VI, also endorsed the appeal, emphasizing that the situation demands urgent attention.
He warned that delays could deepen the hardship already being felt by farmers and traders whose livelihoods depend on daily access between the two communities.
