The Babaloja General of Oyo State, Alhaji Yekeen Abass, has empowered over 330 traders and artisans across the state’s 33 local government areas with cash support exceeding ₦10 million.

The empowerment program was flagged off in Ibadan with the presentation of cash to representatives of beneficiaries from the 11 local government areas in Ibadanland.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Abass said the initiative was a fulfillment of a promise made during his familiarization tour to zones across the state.

“This empowerment is a promise come to reality within a short period of time,” he said, adding that the support was made possible through contributions from well-meaning individuals and dignitaries committed to boosting commerce in the state.

He explained that the gesture was aimed at improving the welfare of traders and artisans who form the backbone of the state’s economy.

In his welcome address, a member of the Babaloja in Council, Chief Dauda Oladepo, urged beneficiaries to take the support back to their markets and associations. He said the era of using the association’s name for personal gain was over.

“Things have changed for the better in the traders and artisans association,” Oladepo stated.

Some of the representatives receiving the funds said it was the first time market leaders were being carried along in such a scheme.

A breakdown of the distribution shows 110 beneficiaries from Ibadan Zone 1 and 2, 40 traders and artisans in Oyo town, and 50 individuals in Ogbomoso who each received ₦20,000. In Oke-Ogun Zones I and II, 100 traders and artisans shared over ₦200,000, while 30 beneficiaries were catered for across the three local governments in Ibarapaland.

The Babaloja General said the program would continue as part of efforts to strengthen small businesses and improve livelihoods across Oyo State.
