Al-farouq Aminu, founder of the Aminu Good Work Foundation (AGWF), announced on Friday that the annual AGWF elite camp aims to identify and scout talented young basketball players. The three-day camp, held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, will conclude on June 23.
Aminu, a former D’Tigers forward and 2015 AfroBasket Champion, shared his motivation for establishing the camp. “Having played in the NBA for 11 years, I recognize the importance of support and guidance in achieving success. I feel a sense of duty to provide opportunities for young basketballers to thrive.”
The camp, now in its eighth edition, has shown significant improvement in the skills and standards of play exhibited by participants. Aminu praised the coaching crew for their dedication and expertise, noting that former participants have gone on to play at various levels in basketball worldwide.
One notable example is Adenike Olawuyi, who attended the camp in 2019 and now plays for the D’Tigress and NKA Universitas Pecs in Hungary. Aminu expressed his hope that all participants will become leaders and better individuals, with scouts on hand to identify talents to nurture into stardom.
The first day of the camp featured 41 girls from Oyo State showcasing their skills and talents. Aminu reiterated the camp’s aim: “We want to help every single kid improve in basketball.”
