After 25 years of abandonment, the Federal Government has commenced the expansion of the Ibadan-Ijebu Igbo road.
According to the Project Manager, Ade Adedeji, the construction of the road will start in Olomi area of Ibadan and link Ijebu Igbo.
Adedeji, who is representing the contractor handling the project, DC Engineers, added that the project would be completed in two years.
He said, “After 25 years of being abandoned, the 45-kilometre stretch of the road will be rehabilitated. It will boost socio-economic activities of people along the path and ease inter-state movement between Oyo and Ogun states.
The project, which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, is a dual carriageway with drainage, street lights, over 32 culverts and three bridges.
The major bridge is at Olomi in Ibadan, which is 45 metres in length and about 14 metres wide. The project has five sections located in Apade to the Oyo State border and Olojuoro through the Oyo State border to Ijebu Igbo. Clearing of the road path covering Olomi, Ayegun, Apade and Ijebu-Igbo has already begun.
“Barring all odds, the project, which has completion period of two years, will be delivered as expected. The major challenge will come from the villagers but so far, we have enjoyed their support.”
Punch reports that some of the villagers expressed their desire to cooperate with the engineers working on the road, while appealing to the Federal Government to release funds appropriately so that the construction would not extend beyond two years
