As the sun rises today November 21, 2025, it will do so with a golden glow for many within and outside the legal community. Today marks the birthday of one of the Nigerian Bar’s finest gentlemen, Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, a Lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Life Bencher, Fellow Chartered Institute of Arbitration UK, Leader, Philanthropist, and Statesman in every sense of the word.

For those who have walked with him in friendship or in professional service, this day is far more than a date on the calendar, it is a moment to celebrate an extraordinary life of impact, integrity, and quiet greatness.

Few men embody the ideals of the Bar as Aare Akinboro does, brilliance without arrogance, power without pride, and influence without intimidation. His life’s trajectory reflects the timeless Yoruba adage that “Ìwà l’ẹwà”, meaning “Character is beauty.”

Through decades of unbroken service, he has demonstrated that true leadership is not in loud declarations or flamboyant gestures but in steady hands, deep convictions, and an abiding faith in the power of fairness and justice.

A Lifetime of Purpose and Professional Excellence

To those not close to him, Aare Akinboro’s calm composure may appear eerie, but those who know him well understand that beneath that gentle smile lies the steel of conviction and the brilliance of a first-rate mind. Over the years, he has proven himself a consummate Bar man, a devoted practitioner who combines intellectual rigour with a humane approach to law and leadership.

His distinguished service as National Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association remains one of the most exemplary in the history of that office. During his tenure, he reorganized administrative structures, improved coordination among branches, improved staff welfare and set new benchmarks for transparency and efficiency. He was not merely a scribe of the Association, he was its moral compass, bridge builder, patient, visionary, and firm when it mattered most.

Aare Akinboro’s contributions have since transcended office or title. His elevation to the prestigious rank of Life Bencher was a recognition of sterling merit, an acknowledgment by the legal establishment that here is a man who has given his all to the ideals of justice and mentorship.

Through his professional excellence, he has inspired a generation of young lawyers to view law not just as a career, but as a calling that demands integrity, empathy, and devotion to truth.

The Man Beyond The Wig and Gown

Yet, to confine Akinboro’s worth to his professional achievements would be to understate his essence. He is, above all, a man of people and purpose. His warmth, humility, and accessibility distinguish him in a profession often criticized for elitism. He listens more than he speaks, acts more than he promises, and gives more than he receives.

His philanthropic efforts are also remarkable. Over the years, he has supported countless young lawyers with mentorship opportunities, law school sponsorships, and start-up assistance for their practices. Many have testified that their dreams might have withered had Akinboro not intervened at critical junctures. His philosophy seems to be simple, that is: “If God has raised me, it is to raise others.”

A deeply spiritual man, Akinboro combines faith with reason, principle with compassion. He is a family man to the core, a devoted husband and lovely father whose sense of duty at home mirrors his dedication to the larger legal family.

A Natural Leader with Charisma and Tact

Leadership, they say, is not about titles but about influence, and influence flows from authenticity. By this measure, Aare Akinboro stands tall as a leader among leaders. His charisma is quiet but magnetic, the kind that unites rather than divides. In meetings, he exudes calm authority; in conflict, he becomes the voice of reason and moderation. Colleagues often remark that when Akinboro speaks, tempers settle and clarity emerges.

He is the kind of leader who values collaboration, who believes that no single person, however gifted, holds a monopoly on wisdom. His approach to teamwork emphasizes complementality and synergy – that beautiful interplay where each person’s strength compensates for another’s weakness.

The Torchbearer of a Noble Tradition

The Nigerian Bar Association has, over the decades, produced leaders who have become national icons, visionaries who lifted the profession beyond advocacy into nation-building. In this treasured tradition, Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, stands as the next natural torchbearer.

His candidacy for the 2026 NBA Presidency is not merely a matter of rotation or regional sentiment, it is a matter of continuity and renewal. By placing him at the helm, the Bar would be reaffirming its commitment to excellence, innovation, and moral integrity. He represents the synthesis of experience and foresight, the ideal bridge between the past and the future.

Akinboro understands the evolving challenges of legal practice in the 21st century: digital transformation, declining ethical standards, and the need for the Bar to reassert itself as the conscience of the nation. His vision for the NBA is bold yet attainable, an Association that empowers its members, defends the rule of law with courage, and stands as a moral voice in national life.

Integrity as a Way of Life

In a time when society cries out for leaders with moral spine, Akinboro stands as a refreshing contrast. He has never been associated with controversy, factionalism, or ethical lapses. His word is his bond, and his actions are guided by an inner compass of integrity. He often says that “in law, as in life, reputation is not built by brilliance but by consistency.”

That consistency has defined his journey. From his early days as a young advocate to his current stature as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Life Bencher, he has remained grounded, accessible, and purpose-driven. To young lawyers, he is a mentor, to peers, a dependable colleague, and to elders, a reassuring symbol that the future of the Bar remains secure.

A Bridge Between Generations

Perhaps Akinboro’s most enduring quality is his ability to connect generations. He speaks the language of the young without abandoning the wisdom of the old. He mentors with empathy, not condescension. His offices and phone lines are open to all, evidence that humility is not weakness but strength refined by experience.

In him, the Bar sees a man who listens before leading, who consults before concluding, and who acts only after weighing consequences. This rare blend of patience and decisiveness makes him uniquely suited for leadership in an era that demands both sensitivity and strategy.

Celebrating a Life of Impact

As Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro celebrates another year of life, those of us privileged to call him friend, colleague, or mentor pause to salute not just his achievements but his essence. His life is a sermon in quiet strength, a reminder that leadership can be noble, that success can be humble, and that greatness can wear a smile.

We celebrate his unflagging dedication to humanity, his generosity of spirit, and his lifelong devotion to the cause of justice. We celebrate a man who sees leadership as stewardship, and power as responsibility. Above all, we celebrate a future that looks bright because men like him still walk among us, steady, selfless, and sure.

Conclusion: The Bar’s Moment of Choice

As the Nigerian Bar Association prepares for its next electoral cycle, the choice before the legal community is both moral and historical. In Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, the Bar has before it a leader who embodies all that is noble in the legal tradition: intellect, integrity, empathy, and vision.

His birthday, therefore, is not merely a personal celebration but a call to reflection, for the Bar, the Bench, and the nation. It is a reminder that destiny occasionally sends us leaders who unite competence with conscience, and vision with virtue. Akinboro is one of such.

May this birthday bring him renewed strength and divine favour as he continues to serve the profession and humanity. And may the Bar, when the time comes, choose wisely, by entrusting its future to a man who has long prepared for it with diligence, devotion, and dignity.

Happy Birthday, Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, the Gentle Lion at the Bar.
