The Senator representing Oyo North senatorial district, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, said that direct primaries is a suitable means of selective candidates for elective positions in Nigeria.
Buhari, a lawmaker representing Oyo North senatorial district under the platform of the All Progressives Congress said such steps will strengthen internal democracy and reduce crisis in the party
The Senator while speaking with Journalists in Ibadan on Saturday said politicians who believe in buying of votes and induce delegates with other materials things will be automatically knock out of the game
“How many people will you buy to vote for you during the primaries , you cannot be everywhere, even you will be struggling to win your ward and people who have no direct relationship with people at the grassroots or any input in the society prior that time will be placed where they belongs” he said.
Buhari who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime further argued that indirect primaries will afford every card carrying members of the party the opportunity to vote for an aspirant of their choice without any form of inducements.
“In Osun state the person that won the gubernatorial primary already have over 120,000 votes from APC members alone he just need to do more campaign to canvass members of the public and maintain cordial relationships with the party.”
While speaking on the gale of defection at the National Assembly, the Ogbomoso born lawmaker said such is not new in Nigeria political system especially during the election year, very “soon things will take shape as event unfolds.” he said
He also expressed optimism that President Muhammadu Buhari will win 2019 election with his performance.
