Veterinary professionals have on Tuesday called on Nigerians and the global community to recognise the essential roles of veterinarians in safeguarding the health of animals, humans and the environment, emphasising the significance of their contributions to food security and public health.
This position was echoed by the keynote speakers and stakeholders present at the World Veterinary Day 2024 celebration organised by the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Oyo state branch, held at the Carlton Gate Xclusive Hotel in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state.
The event, themed “Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers,” highlighted the significance of veterinarians’ activities in protecting both animal health and human health.
In his welcome address, Dr John Famoyin, Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Oyo state branch, stressed the importance of recognising veterinarians as essential health workers.
He stated, “Veterinarians play a critical role in safeguarding animal health, which positively impacts human well-being. It is imperative that we acknowledge their vital contributions to society.”
The first keynote speaker, Prof. James Olopade, Director of Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Ibadan, highlighted the role of veterinarians in ensuring public safety.
He emphasised their expertise in addressing infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental conservation.
Prof. Olopade said, “Veterinarians are indispensable in safeguarding public health through their knowledge and skills in disease prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and environmental conservation.
“Their proactive measures are crucial in preventing outbreak of diseases and protecting communities from potential health risks.”
The second keynote speaker, Dr Olubukola Olayemi, Vice President, Association of Private Veterinary Medical Practitioners, Oyo State, addressed the audience on the delivery of quality veterinary services to the public, stressing the need for excellence and professionalism in veterinary practice.
She remarked, “Quality veterinary services are essential for promoting animal welfare and public health safety. Veterinarians must uphold the highest standard of professionalism to deliver optimal care to animals and the community.
“Their dedication ensures a healthier environment for all beings, fostering a symbiotic relationship between humans and animals with lots of benefits.”
Also in his address, Dr Fidelis Annoye, Managing Director of Annovet, spoke on food security and public health concerns.
He highlighted the importance of veterinarians in maintaining food safety standards and preventing spread of diseases.
His words: “Veterinarians play a critical role in ensuring food security and safeguarding public health through their expertise in disease prevention and control.
“Their vigilance in monitoring food production processes ensures the safety and well-being of consumers.”
Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, expressed appreciation for the contributions of veterinarians to public health, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting veterinarians and strengthening intersectoral collaboration to combat infectious diseases of zoonotic origin.
She emphasised, “The government is committed to supporting veterinarians and promoting collaboration between human health and animal health sectors to address emerging health challenges and ensure the well-being of both animals and humans.”
Earlier, Dr (Prince) Olumide Ademiluyi, Managing Director of Dotsan-Olumide and Company, who was the Chairman of the event, stressed the significance of protecting the veterinary profession.
He asserted that, “It is important to protect the veterinary profession and acknowledge the essential role veterinarians play in safeguarding public health.”
The event also featured an interactive segment and presentation of awards to Prof. Joseph Akinrinmade, Dr (Prince) Bola Oyedepo and Dr Samuel Adeyemi, for their contributions to the veterinary profession and the society.
