The Management of the University of Ibadan has named a newly built female Postgraduate hall after the first female Professor in Nigeria, Prof. Felicia Adetowun Omolara Ogunsheye as a way of honoring the 93 years old retired academic.
The new hall which was funded by the federal government under the NEEDS Assessment has 132-bed spaces with fully fitted Closed-Circuit Television covering all the floors.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, UI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka who thanked government for the hostel building recalled that “this University was conceptualized as a fully residential institution at the beginnings but because of finance and population explosions over the years, the university could not provide accommodation for every student, pointing out that the gap must be filled in order to really achieve set objectives.
On why his administration decided to name the hall after Prof. Ogunsheye, he said, “the Joint Council/Senate Committee met at an Emergency meeting and decided in favour of our elegant and highly respected mother, woman of substance, an icon, a global citizen, a role model, a diligent, distinguished scholar of immense repute, Prof. Felicia Adetowun Omolara Ogunsheye (nee Banjo)”
Prof. Ogunsheye was among the pioneering 104 students of 1948 set. She was born 5 December 1926. The Committee named the Hall as Adetowun Ogunsheye Postgraduate Hall.
Responding, the honoree who thanked the university for counting her worthy of the honour, hinted that she felt overwhelmed, urging students to make the hall a place of integrity, morality, probity and love of one another.
Prof. Ogunsheye pleaded with those who will be occupying the new Hall to maintain the facilities.
