AS part of ongoing reforms in Oyo State’s waste management activities, the government has unveiled its new plan to handle waste under the public private partnership it has entered into with West African NRG.
Under the new plan, according to the Oyo State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Isaac Ishola, the management of medical waste will take on a “specialised process” and that all hospitals in the state will be involved in the new plan.
“Medical waste is a special kind of waste. What people have been doing is mingling it together with every kind of waste,” the commissioner said.
“We have identified all the hospitals in Oyo State, it is part of the enumeration we have completed now.”
He said federal hospitals had also been included because “waste generation is a local matter.”
“Already, we have written the stakeholders. We want to have a meeting with them.
“What the law says is that medical waste should not be lumped together because the disposal is not the same. It requires specialised disposal system.”
He said actions in line with government’s latest position on medical waste would commence in the coming weeks.
