The Oyo state chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has visited the burnt Akesan market and commiserated with the victims of the market inferno.
The body which was received by the market women under the leadership of the Iyaloja, Alhaja Peju Bakare urged the Oyo state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde to incorporate professional town planners and town planning consultants in the redesigning and the reconstruction of the Akesan Market.
NITP Oyo chapter, speaking through its chairman, Tpl Adeyemo Olajide said the body is ready to give the state government necessary supports and professional expertise in the reconstruction of the new market.
He said “We are ready to give the state government necessary supports and professional expertise in actualising the new Akesan Market.
“The genesis of the inferno cannot be established but planners call for adequate air spacing between buildings, setbacks, parking spaces, accessibility in markets areas to allow easier evacuation from unfortunate fire incident. Market authorities should frown at on-street parkings and on-street trading to allow easier access to market facilities and free flow of traffic.
“We call for creation and provision of master plans, development plans, local plans and subject plans, development plans, local plans, and master plan to guide the development of our cities and towns and to avert future reoccurrence”
