Oyo State Executive Council has approved the hosting of Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s national football team in Ibadan ahead of their upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda.
The match which will be a return leg of the qualifying fixture for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan on Saturday, 27th September.
The approval was announced following the Council’s meeting presided over by the Acting Governor, His Excellency Barr. Abdulraheem Adebayo Lawal.
This was revealed to the Newsmen after the Council’s meeting held on Tuesday at the Governor’s office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.
According to the Council, the hosting will provide the national team popularly known as the Falconets with a conducive environment for final preparations before the crucial qualifier.
A total sum of ₦110 million has been approved to cover logistics, accommodation, feeding, security, and other related expenses during the team’s stay in the state.
The qualifying match between Nigeria and Rwanda is scheduled to take place in Ibadan, bringing national attention to the city and reinforcing its position as a hub for major sporting events.
The State Government emphasized that its support for the Falconets is part of a broader strategy to promote sports development and youth empowerment across the state.
Officials noted that hosting the national team not only boosts morale but also encourages local athletes and young football talents within Oyo to aspire to international standards.
