In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, the wife of Oyo State Governor, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde, has empowered over 850 nursing mothers across 33 local governments, emphasizing the importance of breastfeeding for infant health.
Mrs. Makinde urged nursing mothers to provide life-saving nutrition to their children, stressing that breastfeeding is essential for optimal growth and development.
She said this on Tuesday, in Ibadan, at the World Breast Feeding Week organised by office of the Wife of Oyo Governor in collaboration with Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board.
“The first 1,000 days of a child’s life are crucial, and breastfeeding is the foundation of a healthy start.
“It’s not just about feeding, it’s about bonding, love, and care. Breast milk is a natural vaccine that equips babies with necessary antibodies to fight diseases.
“Breastfeeding is the first step towards giving children the best start in life,” Mrs. Makinde said.
Also speaking, Dr. Muyideen Olatunji, Executive Secretary of Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, reinforced the importance of exclusive breastfeeding within the first 1,000 days for a healthy life.
“This period is crucial for optimal growth and development,” he emphasized.
The event, which featured interactive sessions with healthcare professionals, aimed to address common breastfeeding challenges and offer practical tips.
Nursing mothers shared their experiences, receiving support and encouragement from peers and experts.
While speaking, one of the nursing mothers present commended the state government fot the initiative adding that she has learnt alot.
“I’m grateful for this empowerment program. I’ve learned so much about breastfeeding and how to overcome challenges. Mrs. Makinde’s commitment to our welfare is truly appreciated.” She said.
To further support nursing mothers, the Oyo State Government announced plans to establish breastfeeding-friendly facilities in public spaces, promoting a conducive environment for breastfeeding. Nursing mothers received cash gifts, food items, and diapers for their babies, symbolizing the state government’s commitment to their welfare.
“This initiative sets a precedent for community leaders and stakeholders to prioritize breastfeeding promotion, ensuring a healthier future for Oyo State’s children,” Mrs. Makinde said. “I’m dedicated to promoting maternal and child health, and I pledge continued support for nursing mothers in Oyo State.”
