Oyo state athletes who participated in the just concluded 2017 National Youth Games in Ilorin have claimed that they were not paid their full entitlements.
The competition ended on Saturday at the University of Ilorin with Delta State emerging as overall winners.
Oyo finished 12th with three gold, two silver and 10 bronze medals.
It was also learnt that the athletes are yet to get their allowances for participating in the zonal eliminations for the games.
The state, it was gathered, had promised to pay the athletes immediately after the games.
An Oyo State athlete said, “Most of us are in secondary school and that may be the reason why they haven’t paid us our allowances.
“We gave our best and we deserve to be paid. What they are paying us is smaller when compared to what our counterparts from other states got. We saw how other states motivated their athletes financially to perform. That didn’t happen in our own case.”
The Oyo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Abayomi Oke, said that the General Manager of the Oyo State Sports Council, Gboyega Makinde, confirmed to him that the state athletes were paid fully before they left for Ilorin.
