A middle aged man whose identity is yet to be known was killed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, when men of Oyo State Police command engaged a two-man armed robbery gang in a gun duel.
The incident occurred around 5pm at Adelaja junction, Mokola Ibadan on Friday.
The victim was said to have dressed in a white shirt and a blue Jean trouser.
Insideoyo.com gathered that the two armed robbers were on the run with a “Ghana must go” bag containing huge amount of money when the police shot in the air.
A source said the robbers must have robbed one of the “Bureau de change” merchants in Sabo area of Mokola while another source said the robbers snatched the money from a customer in one of the new generation banks in the same area.
The Police has seen evacuated the lifeless body of the slain victim.
An eye witness, Mr. Kabiru Adeoye who spoke with journalists said the armed robbers were on bike when the police were pursing them with a white Hilux van.
He said the police were shooting sporadically in the air to scare the robbers but a man passing-by whom no one recognizes was shot by the robbers in order to escape arrest.
He said; “I was in my shop when I heard the sound of the gun shot. When I came out, I saw people running helter skelter. I can’t really say who killed the man out of the robbers and the police but people said it was the robbers. The young man was in cold blood when I got to the spot of the incident. The police recovered some huge amount of money and bike from the robbers. It is unfortunate to see this kind of a thing in this kind of time.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations office (PPRO) Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed the incident, adding that it was true the police recovered motorcycle and a locally made pistle from the robbers.
He said the police had intensified investigation to arrest the fleeing robbers.
