A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain in Oyo state, Engr Seyi Makinde, has described the ultimatum issued to Olubadan by newly elevated Ibadan Obas as an aberration taken too far.
Makinde said it is quite disturbing how our tradition and culture have been so debased and distorted by our respected high chiefs who are supposed to be custodians and promoters of our tradition.
“it is unheard of and ridiculous for a son to issue quit notice to his father in the latter’s house” said the Ibadan-born Politician.
He opined that both Olubadan and the High Chiefs should towed the line of peaceful resolution, especially at this time when the renowned city is faced with grinding poverty, low education attainment, infrastructural deficit and brigandage occasioned by high unemployed and restless youthful population.
He wondered when the advisory roles of the high chiefs have metamorphosed into ultimatum issuing.
“The tradition and culture betrothed unto us by our forefathers have been a reference point globally and this is being reduced to a subject of ridicule and mockery in the recent time by unnecessary interference by the ruling government into a hitherto age-long rancour-free tradition,” he added.
He emphasized that Olubadan is and still remains the symbol of authority in Ibadanland and any attempt to usurp that role will not augur well.
Makinde reiterated that efforts of well meaning and eminent indigenes of Ibadanland should be supported to find a lasting solution to the crisis so we can fan out all ember of discord in the city.
