In an effort to raise more awareness and tackling violence against women and children in the community, the wife of the executive Chairman of Olorunsogo Local Government area of Oyo state, Mrs. Rasheedat Olayanju, has intensified her campaign against gender-based violence (GBV) in the council.
Speaking during an awareness walk within major communities in Igbeti and its environs which kick started at the council Secretariat and terminated at the palace of Onigbeti of Igbeti land, Mrs Olayanju said the campaign, is designed to educate residents on the dangers of GBV and promote a culture of respect, equality, and protection for vulnerable individuals.
Mrs. Olayanju, who has been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, highlighted the importance of addressing GBV as a critical issue that affects families, communities, and society as a whole.
She commended the sincere commitment of the wife of the governor of Oyo state, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde on the campaign against Gender Based violence, describing her as a major force who is leading by example.
Mrs. Olayanju called for collective action in the fight against gender-based violence, urging both men and women to take responsibility in creating safe environments for all.
“Gender-based violence is a societal ill that has caused untold suffering, and we must act now to end it,”
“The campaign is set to feature public awareness campaigns, sensitization programs in schools, and partnerships with local law enforcement to ensure effective response to incidents of violence.” She said
Mrs. Olayanju also announced that a helpline would be set up to provide immediate support to survivors of gender-based violence, including legal assistance and counseling services. The goal is to empower victims, ensure justice, and foster a society where violence has no place.
The launch was attended by key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, civil society groups, and women’s organizations, who expressed their commitment to supporting the campaign.
As the campaign gains momentum, Olorunsogo Local Government is hopeful that the initiative will inspire lasting change and a more inclusive society free from the scourge of gender-based violence.
