In a groundbreaking event, the Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide Oyo State Chapter has elected new executive officers, marking the end of three decades of factional existence.
The historic election, which took place at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan, saw thousands of voters participate in the keenly contested elections.
Mr. Okechukwu Umeh emerged as the new president, defeating his challenger, Barr. Damian Ajare, with 570 votes to 433.
Other elected officials include Evangelist Ijeoma Uchendu as Women Leader, Barr. Chima Ona as Youth Leader, Mr. Peter Orji as Treasurer, and Mr. Charles Obasi as Public Relations Officer.
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Hon. Tallest Innocent, described the election as a “watershed moment” for the Igbo community in Oyo State, marking a positive turn in their fortunes.
He urged the newly elected officials to extend hands of fellowship to their opponents and work towards the betterment of the Igbo community in Oyo State.
The newly elected president, Mr. Okechukwu Umeh, vowed to serve the Igbo community in Oyo State, describing his emergence as a “call to service.”
The Women Leader, Evangelist Ijeoma Uchendu, promised to focus on women empowerment through the establishment of a women’s development center and a knowledge hub for young girls.
