A coalition of religious organizations in Nigeria has urged the government to enact regulations on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to prevent its potential dangers to humanity.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Institute of Church and Society in Ibadan, the coalition expressed concerns over the ethical and spiritual implications of AI.
The coalition comprises the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN-ICS), the Institute of Church and Society, and Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), with support from the Future of Life Institute (FLI).
While speaking, Rt. Rev. S. Oluwole Onaleke, Bishop of the Diocese of Agodi, Methodist Church Nigeria, warned that AI’s rapid advancement could challenge fundamental human values. He emphasized the need for legislative action to regulate AI’s use in Nigeria.
According to Onaleke, while AI has the potential to improve lives, there’s also a risk of people misusing it in ways that could undermine human dignity and religious principles.
“We must not deceive ourselves into thinking that technology is neutral.
“AI is reshaping society, influencing decisions, and even altering human interactions. The real danger is when it begins to push boundaries, making people feel like they can play God.” he said.
The coalition urged the Nigerian government to enact policies ensuring AI aligns with ethical standards and national interests, warning against the risks of unregulated AI development.
Rt. Rev. David Adekoya, Bishop of the Methodist Church, Diocese of Elekuro, Ibadan, noted that while AI cannot be stopped, it must be approached with intelligence and wisdom to ensure it remains a tool for human progress.
His words: “AI is here to stay, but we must not lose our IQ. We must regulate it with intelligence and wisdom, ensuring it does not override human values.”
Other speakers, including Ven. Femi Taiwo, Chairman of the Institute of Church and Society, and Alhaja Airat Ogungbenro, Project Coordinator of the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), called for increased advocacy, public awareness, and legislative measures to regulate AI and its impact on society.
