For failing to account for what they use the N11 million allegedly collected from their respective councils’ accounts, a former chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the Association of Local Government Of Nigeria, ALGON, Yekinni Popoola and 6 other former council chairmen in the state will sleep at the cell of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Insideoyo.com learnt that few weeks to the 2015 general elections, all the council bosses in the state, in a uniform manner, collected N11 million each from their various councils’ account.
For close to two months, the ex-chairmen have been guests of the commission’s Ibadan office. The last 7 were questioned today.
An EFCC source said only Atanda Adeloore (Ibarapa East) was allowed to go home.
The six others- Popoola (Irepo), Wasiu Kunle Olatunbosun (Olorunsogo), Saheed Yusuf Alaran (Iseyin), Adisa Adeniji (Itesiwaju), Francis Adetunji Omolewu (Ibarapa North) and Balogun Lord Listowell ( Oorelope) were unlucky as they were detained for failing to “give reasonable answers to questions asked by officials of the commission.”
Now that the commission has concluded interogating the ex-council helmsmen, insideoyo.com was reliably informed, a serving permanent secretary, PS, in one of the state’s ministries will be re-invited for questioning.
The source added that property belonging to the PS at Bodija and Basorun areas of Ibadan, the state capital, are under close watch.
When initially invited, the PS was was quoted to have told the commission’s officials that “…mine is to act on papers; to write as directed…”
As at the time of filing this report, the detained ex-council chairmen are yet to be given bail conditions.
It was however learnt that the process to get their bail application will be done tomorrow.
