The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Oyo State Chapter, has celebrated women across the state and Nigeria on the occasion of the 2026 International Women’s Day, calling for greater commitment toward gender equality, economic empowerment and leadership inclusion.
The association made the call in a statement jointly signed by its Chairperson, Omolola Alamu, and Secretary, Eniola Adeaga, in Ibadan on Saturday.
NAWOJ noted that the 2026 International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain,” which focuses on accelerating progress through economic empowerment, reflects the urgent need to create more opportunities for women to thrive in different sectors of the economy.
According to the association, Nigerian women have continued to demonstrate resilience, determination and creativity despite the numerous social and economic challenges confronting them.
The statement commended women in Oyo State for their significant contributions to national development, particularly in agriculture, technology, governance and the informal sector.
It read in part, “We celebrate the resilient and industrious women of Oyo State and Nigeria at large who continue to make meaningful contributions to the growth and development of the society.
“Women remain the backbone of our economy, working tirelessly in agriculture, business, technology, governance and several other sectors that drive development.”
The association described the Nigerian woman as a symbol of strength and perseverance, noting that many women in the state were breaking barriers and setting new standards of excellence in their respective fields.
“In Oyo State, from the vibrant markets of Dugbe to the emerging technology hubs in Bodija, women are breaking barriers and redefining leadership in different sectors,” the statement added.
While celebrating the achievements recorded by women over the years, NAWOJ stressed the need for deliberate policies and actions that would ensure greater gender inclusion in governance and decision-making positions.
“We do not just celebrate how far women have come, we also demand a seat at every table where the future of our nation is being decided,” the statement said.
The association also commended female journalists for their dedication and professionalism in amplifying the voices of the vulnerable and promoting accountability in governance.
It added that women in the media had continued to play a critical role in shaping public discourse and advocating social justice across the country.
NAWOJ further pledged to sustain its advocacy efforts aimed at promoting the rights, welfare and empowerment of women through responsible journalism and public engagement.
“As women mark this important milestone, Oyo NAWOJ remains committed to using the power of the pen to advocate for the advancement of women and the protection of their rights in society,” the statement concluded.
