The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun the distribution of relief materials to about 300 households that were affected by rainstorm in the Oke Ogun area of Oyo state.
Heavy rainfall in June 2020 had wreaked havoc on seven communities in Itesiwaju council area of Oyo state.
The affected communities are Okaka, Komu, Igbojaiye, Oke-Amu, Otu, Ipapo and Babaode.
Muhammed Muhammadu, director-general of NEMA, who was represented by Akiode Saheed, the acting south-west zonal coordinator of the agency, said the distribution of relief items followed a request by Oyo state emergency management agency (OYSEMA), which was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, through the office of the NEMA DG.
He stated that items which included rice, beans, garri, tinned tomatoes, mattresses, and blankets were distributed to the victims of the 2020 disaster.
He also urged citizens of the state to avoid another disaster by not building on waterways.
Lateef Adebayo, who represented Rauf Olaniyan, the Oyo state deputy governor, at the ceremony, appealed to the beneficiaries to make good use of the materials distributed.
He also encouraged the residents to cultivate the habit of planting trees to serve as wind breakers to mitigate future occurrences in the area.
