An Oyo State-based socio-political group, Apero Mekunu, has mourned the victims of the stampede at a funfair event organized for children in the Basorun area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement signed and released by the head of the group, Mr. Akeem Salawu, Apero Mekunu said it is deeply saddened by the incident, praying that God comforts the families of the victims.
The statement reads: “The Apero Mekunu movement uses this medium to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident at Islamic High School, Bashorun District, Ibadan, where a stampede led to the loss of innocent lives.
“The heartbreaking event has left a scar on the hearts of many, especially as it involved the lives of children who were caught in the chaos.
“In moments like this, words often fall short, but we want to express our sincerest sympathy to the bereaved families. No one should ever have to endure such an unimaginable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the affected as they navigate through this devastating time.
“However, as we mourn, we must also reflect on the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
“It is crucial to highlight that the first level of safety management is to avoid or eliminate the possibility of such incidents in the first place. While some may have argued that the economic realities of our nation today may have prompted such an unmanageable level of gathering, however, there was apparent negligence in ensuring proper safety measures.
“The absence of adequate planning, crowd control, and safety protocols calls into question the responsibility of organizers and the authorities in charge of ensuring the well-being of the attendees.
“The government has a fundamental duty to ensure that proper security and safety measures are in place at events, especially when children are involved. In this tragic instance, it is evident that this responsibility was not met, leading to a catastrophic loss of lives that could have been prevented with proper precautions.
“We urge the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and hold those responsible accountable. Furthermore, it is high time that our government prioritizes the implementation and enforcement of strict safety regulations at public events to avoid such incidents in the future.
“Our children, families, and communities deserve better protection, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.
“In the face of this tragedy, let us stand together in mourning and reflection.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the affected families find strength during this incredibly difficult time,” Apero Mekunu prayed.
