Students of Al-Qalam College, Ibadan, made it to the grand finale of the inaugural Inter Secondary Schools Competition held in honor of Engineer Bolarinwa James Olowe on Monday, June 3, 2024, at the Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan.
The event was organised by the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers, Oyo State Chapter under the chairmanship of an Associate Professor (Engr.) Abdwasiy Ajagbe
Participating in a public speaking event (debate) among the top five at the grand finale and winning second place out of fifteen schools that participated in the competition is a significant achievement that reflects both talent and dedication.
The competition was held in stages:
Stage 1: Essay Writing of 500 words on the topic “Land Restoration and Its Role in Securing a Sustainable Future for Our Land.” Discuss the challenges posed by desertification and drought, and propose innovative solutions for building resilience.
Stage 2: The Grand Finale Debate (Top 5 Schools).
The event brought together a diverse group of students from various reputable schools in Oyo State, showcasing their oratory skills, critical thinking, and persuasive communication.
The participants delivered speeches on the theme “OUR LAND; OUR FUTURE,” each presenting unique perspectives and styles.
The judging panel, comprising experienced educators and professionals, evaluated the speakers based on content, delivery, articulation, and audience engagement.
Securing second place among strong competitors is a testament to the speaker’s ability to connect with the audience and present their ideas effectively. This achievement highlights not only the individual’s public speaking prowess but also the support and training provided by their school. This accomplishment serves as an inspiration to peers and emphasizes the importance of honing communication skills.
The lead speaker, Toheerah Ikumapayi, of Al-Qalam College remarked that the event had short notice from the organizer, intended to catch schools off guard.
Despite this, their team secured second position out of fifteen schools, showcasing their hard work and dedication. The experience was memorable and has motivated them to aim for greater achievements.
Other team members of Al-Qalam College include Hussain Naheem, Salaudeen Nihmotallah, Olalekan Aisha, and Adediran Khaiyroh.
Mr. Idris Afolabi, who led the Al-Qalam Team, reiterated that their focus was not on the prize but on gaining experiences outside the school system. He stressed that their team acquired skills in teamwork, presentation, time management, and friendship building. He extended gratitude to teachers, parents, and guardians for their unwavering support and guidance to the Al-Qalam Team. He commended his students’ efforts for their ability to articulate and establish valuable points with clarity on the thought-provoking topic. He concluded that their performance brought great pride to the school and was truly inspiring.
In conclusion, winning second place in this event is a commendable feat that showcases the exceptional talent of the Al-Qalam Team and the hard work of their teachers. The school is setting a high standard for future greatness.
