Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, Oyo State, made history on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, by hosting its first inaugural lecture, focusing on a timely and important topic: “Indigenous Courts: Are They Still Relevant in the Administration of Justice at the Grassroots?”

The lecture was delivered by C.L. Babatunde Akintola Johnson, a Chief Lecturer in the Department of General Studies, who gave deep insights into how traditional justice systems still matter today, especially for resolving community-based disputes.

In his welcome address, the Acting Rector, Dr. Gbade Akinteye, gave expressed appreciation to everyone in attendance and paid tribute to late Prof. Abiodun Ojo, in whose memory the venue was named. Dr. Akinteye revealed that before his passing, Prof. Ojo had personally recommended that C.L. Babatunde should be the first person to deliver an inaugural lecture at the polytechnic.

According to Dr. Akinteye, “Cl. Babatunde is the most senior and respected lecturer in this institution, and it is only right to give him this honor.”

He congratulated the lecturer for his dedication to academic excellence and his valuable contributions to the polytechnic. He also encouraged both senior and junior staff to uphold and promote the high academic standards of the institution.

Dr. Akinteye then took a moment to appreciate the presence of the Governing Council Chairman, Prof. Kazeem A. Adebiyi, thanking him for his visionary leadership and ongoing support since his appointment. According to the Ag. Rector, such backing has been instrumental in moving the institution forward.

In his lecture, CL Babatunde explained that indigenous courts existed long before colonial rule, and were often called palace courts or elders’ courts. These courts helped communities settle disputes fairly through deliberation and compensation, rather than punishment, and were led by respected elders. He described how their informal but structured system made justice more accessible, especially to people at the grassroots level.

He noted that these courts emphasized peace, fairness, and tradition, using proverbs and storytelling to reinforce cultural values. Despite being weakened during colonial rule—especially after the 1900 Native Courts Proclamation—the lecturer said that indigenous courts remain active today, especially in rural areas where people still trust them for resolving land, marriage, and family-related disputes.

CL Babatunde called on the government to revive and formally support indigenous courts, suggesting steps such as executive backing, awareness campaigns, and better collaboration with peace and justice organizations. He stressed that these courts are not only fast and fair but also promote peaceful coexistence and community harmony.

The event was attended by top officials of the Institution with the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Kazeem A. Adebiyi, serving as the chief host.

In his remarks, Prof. Adebiyi congratulated the Acting Rector on his achievements and encouraged staff members to pursue higher education, noting that qualifications like a Ph.D. are essential for academic advancement.

The event also featured a vote of thanks by the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr. K.O. Oladeji, who acknowledged the support of management, staff and students. The event closed with remarks from Dr. Akinteye, who declared the lecture officially concluded.
